Whether saintly or satanic, no female leader has done more to shape our modern world. She also annihilated all who stood against her by establishing a bloody religious Inquisition that would darken Spain’s reputation for centuries. She sponsored Columbus’s trip to the Indies and negotiated Spanish control over much of the New World. She laid the foundation for a unified Spain. She ended a twenty-four-generation struggle between Muslims and Christians, forcing North African invaders back over the Mediterranean Sea. In 1474, when most women were almost powerless, twenty-three-year-old Isabella defied a hostile brother and a mercurial husband to seize control of Castile and León. An engrossing and revolutionary biography of Isabella of Castile, the controversial Queen of Spain who sponsored Christopher Columbus's journey to the New World, established the Spanish Inquisition, and became one of the most influential female rulers in history.

Meanwhile, Frances’s mum was supportive, cool, funny, caring, overall a great mother. She was also abusive, as much as I could see. Aled’s mum was this psycho, controlling, a pusher and also mental. These two showed the opposite kind of mum and I really like how the author portrayed these two individuals. Also, there were the mums characters, Carol Last (Aled’s mum) and Frances’s mum. Daniel was a studious person yet he was also a great friend and his determination was really inspiring. She was not smart but she’s a true friend. I love how badass, kind and loyal friend Raine was. These two characters are Asians, I supposed, an Indian and a Korean. I adored the side characters the most, such as Raine and Daniel. I think they developed well throughout the book, the maturity was shown towards the end. I love the main characters, Frances and Aled. They could be remembered vividly and this is the first time for me to really remember all the characters in a book. I really love how unique and strong each character was created in the book. One of the things that really stood out for me was the characters. All the small events that eventually built up till the ending was actually fun to read. It was fast paced and easy to follow through. Starting this book, I was struggling a little to grasp the concept at first but as the story went by, I started to enjoy the writing style and the whole idea of this book. “I wonder- if nobody is listening to my voice, am i making any sound at all?” I’ve heard so many good things about this book, praises and more praises. Why bother climbing Olympus?įear not: the eminent short story writer and Booker Prize-winner George Saunders comes to the rescue with A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, an enthralling, clear-eyed, between-the-covers seminar on seven classic Russian stories and what they reveal about the form-and about human nature. Yet who hasn’t felt a twinge of intimidation when approaching Tolstoy and Chekhov and Gogol and Turgenev and Dostoevsky. And the pleasures they've provided! Our debt to them is huge. The great Russian authors of the nineteenth century paved the way for our own modernity, their creative fires stoked by the inequalities of classism, imperial oppression, and the conundrums of love and morality. What follows is a review of the book by Hamilton Cain, and then an interview with the author, conducted by O's Books Editor, Leigh Haber. But today, instead of a new story, we're celebrating one of the masters of the craft, George Saunders, and his ode to the form, A Swim in the Pond in the Rain. On some special Sundays, we offer readers "Sunday Shorts" -original stories by the best short fiction stylists of our time. "For your information, I picked up a flash from Denver. "Any late news?" Garth asked, over Dollard's shoulder. Since breakfast, he had sat glued to the news while a battery of video announcers reported from central strongholds on the progress of the bacterial epidemic that already had swept the Atlantic seaboard. The last of America's industrial tycoons refocussed his attention on the world telecasts. "Just see that we continue understanding one another," Edwin Dollard snapped. "It's right good we understand each other." It'll be like being reborn again." His pained somber eyes lit up. "As for women, there'll be time enough for them. The others-stupid sheep-let them die!" Lust spread his heavy cheeks into a wide grin. There'll be no tales out of those greaseballs."ĭollard's pudgy features relaxed. "The men still know nothing." His thin lips cracked into a forced smile. "Two more hours-and the ship will be ready," Garth announced. He was in time to observe Garth enter by the paneled tunnel door. Dwin Dollard's nervous stubby fingers spilled three precious drops of his fifth Scotch highball, as he veered his head away from the horrors on the telescreen.
